Of course nobody thinks they're buying a scam. That's the whole point of a good scam.
The difference between people who get rugged constantly and people who don't isn't luck or experience. It's actually running a checklist before every single buy instead of just when something feels off.
Mint authority. Can the developer print more tokens whenever they want. Shows directly on GMGN and Rugcheck for Solana. Green means revoked. Red means active. Active mint with no explanation is enough to close the tab. Someone can inflate supply on demand and dump on every holder simultaneously. That's not a theoretical risk. It's happened on thousands of tokens.
Freeze authority. Different from mint. This one lets the developer freeze specific wallets from selling. Your wallet. Also on GMGN and Rugcheck. Both mint and freeze should show green before touching anything new on Solana.
Liquidity lock. Unlocked liquidity means the developer can pull everything out of the pool whenever price looks good enough. Token becomes untradeable immediately. DEXScreener shows lock status. No lock is a hard stop. Doesn't matter what else looks fine.
Dev hold. How much of the supply is the creator sitting on. Rough benchmarks: 0-5% acceptable, 5-20% needs explaining, above 20% is a problem. Developer holding a large free allocation has zero cost basis. Every dollar retail puts in is pure upside for them. They will sell eventually.
Bundler activity. One entity buying through dozens of wallets in the first block to fake organic demand. GMGN flags this. High bundler hold means there's a wall of supply overhead that got in cheaper than anyone who bought after block one.
Contract renounced. Pull up the contract on Solscan. Find the owner field. Burn address means renounced. Active wallet means someone still controls everything regardless of what the Telegram announcement said. Takes one minute to verify and almost nobody does it.
Rugcheck pastes a score with specific flags in thirty seconds. Not comprehensive but catches obvious problems fast. GMGN puts mint authority, freeze authority, liquidity status, bundler activity and dev hold all on the same screen at the top of any token page.
Open both. Read the indicators. If anything is red and there's no sensible explanation, move on. Takes two minutes total. Most people skip it because they're excited about the chart.
One flag has an explanation sometimes. Active mint on a staking protocol makes sense. Freeze authority on a regulated stablecoin makes sense.
Four flags on a memecoin that launched an hour ago with aggressive Telegram marketing does not have an explanation. Mint not revoked, freeze active, liquidity unlocked, dev holding 30% of supply. That's not a collection of minor concerns. That's a token built specifically to take money from buyers while making exit difficult.
The Telegram group calling it the next 100x is part of the same setup.
Freeze authority. Almost everyone checks liquidity. Fewer check mint. Almost nobody checks freeze authority until after they can't sell.
And renouncement. Marketing says team renounced control. Telegram announcement confirms it. Nobody checks on-chain. Owner field still points to an active wallet. Contract functions still available to whoever controls that address.
The gap between what projects claim and what the chain actually shows is where most of the damage happens.
None of this catches everything. Sophisticated rugs pass every basic check. Liquidity locked, mint revoked, contract renounced, clean Rugcheck score. Developer holds 12% in a wallet nobody flagged. Sells 1% every few days into green candles for three weeks. No dramatic red flag. Just slow consistent selling while retail holds.
What the checklist actually does is eliminate the obvious setups. The ones that are obviously dangerous but people buy anyway because the chart looked good and they skipped the two minutes. That category is responsible for the majority of losses not the sophisticated ones.
Run it every time. Especially when something is moving fast and the group chat is loud and it feels like there's no time to check. That feeling is exactly when checking matters most.
