Single number. Zero to 100. Snapshot of how the market feels right now.

Zero: extreme fear. Panic. People selling. Convinced everything is going lower.

100: extreme greed. Euphoria. Everyone buying. Convinced everything is going higher.

Alternative.me runs the crypto version. Updates daily. CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko both display it. Hard to miss once you start looking for it.

What Goes Into the Number

Not just vibes. Several data sources weighted together.

Volatility 25%. High sudden volatility signals fear. Market moving erratically usually means people are nervous.

Market momentum and volume 25%. Strong buying volume against recent averages signals greed. Everyone piling in.

Social media 15%. Engagement rates on crypto-related content. Unusual spikes in certain hashtags and discussions. High engagement tends to correlate with greed. Silence correlates with fear.

Bitcoin dominance 10%. Rising dominance means capital fleeing to Bitcoin as relative safety within crypto. Fear signal. Falling dominance means risk-on rotation into altcoins. Greed.

Google Trends 10%. What people are searching. "Bitcoin price manipulation" trending suggests fear. Broad interest in Bitcoin price generally suggests greed.

Surveys 15%. Weekly sentiment polls. Currently paused which reduces data quality somewhat but other components still run.

The Contrarian Logic

Classic use of the index works against the crowd.

Extreme fear. Market convinced everything is going lower. Everyone who wanted to sell already sold or is selling. Capitulation. Historically these periods have preceded meaningful recoveries. COVID crash March 2020 the index hit 8. Bitcoin subsequently went from under $4,000 to nearly $70,000 over the following year and a half.

Extreme greed. Euphoria everywhere. Everyone already bought. New buyers needed to push price higher. Historically these periods have preceded corrections. November 2021 index hitting 84 while Bitcoin approached $69,000 all time high. Major correction followed shortly after.

Not a timing tool. Extreme readings can persist for weeks. Market can get more fearful after extreme fear. More greedy after extreme greed. Signal is about positioning not prediction.

Warren Buffett line gets quoted constantly around this. “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.” Easier to say than execute when everyone around you is panicking or euphoric.

Where It Breaks Down

Stays in extreme territory longer than expected. June 2022 bear market the index sat in extreme fear for months. Kept going lower while the signal said extreme fear the whole way down.

Doesn't distinguish between types of fear. Rational fear during a genuine protocol collapse is different from irrational fear during a market-wide panic. Index treats both the same.

Bitcoin focused. Crypto market has changed significantly. Bitcoin dominance elevated. Altcoin sentiment can diverge sharply from Bitcoin sentiment. Index doesn't capture that nuance.

Social component gameable. Coordinated social media activity can influence the social media inputs. Doesn't make the whole index meaningless but introduces noise.

Practically How Traders Use It

Most useful as context not signal.

Opening a long position when index sits at 85 extreme greed. Worth pausing. Market sentiment stretched. Crowded trade. Not saying don't do it. Saying be aware of the sentiment environment.

Adding to a position during extreme fear while thesis remains intact. Historical context suggests being one of the few buying during panic has worked out. Requires conviction in the underlying thesis not just trust in the index.

Combined with other indicators. Index at extreme greed plus funding rates elevated plus open interest at all time high. Multiple stretched signals simultaneously. More meaningful than any single one.
