Pre-set exit on the upside. Price reaches your target, position closes automatically. Profit locked. Done.

Bought SOL at $100. Take profit at $140. SOL hits $140. Sells automatically. 40% gain in the account.

Doesn't matter what happens after. SOL runs to $200. Irrelevant. Trade closed at the target that was set before emotions got involved.

That last part is the whole point.

Why Most People Don't Use It Properly

Position running nicely. Up 35%. Take profit sitting at 40%.

Getting close. Start thinking maybe it goes higher. Move the take profit up to 60%. Price stalls. Pulls back. Now up 15%. Move take profit down. Price keeps falling. Back to entry. Then below.

Turned a 35% gain into a loss because the target kept moving.

Greed dressed up as conviction. Happens constantly. Take profit exists specifically to prevent this. Moving it defeats the purpose entirely.

Partial Take Profits

Don't have to exit everything at once.

Long position. Split into thirds. First third exits at 30% gain. Second third at 60%. Final third holds with a trailing stop to capture any extended move.

Locks in real gains early. Keeps exposure to further upside. Removes the all-or-nothing psychological pressure of one exit decision.

Take Profit and Stop Loss Together

Should be set at the same time before the trade opens.

Stop loss defines the maximum acceptable loss. Take profit defines the target gain. Together they create the risk/reward ratio.

Stop loss at 10% below entry. Take profit at 30% above. Risk/reward of 1:3. Lose $100 if wrong. Make $300 if right. Only need to be right one in four trades to break even.

Setting both before opening means the trade has defined parameters. Not managed by emotion in real time. Just executes according to the plan.

When to Set Your Take Profit

Before the trade opens. Not after it's running green and you're trying to decide how much more you can squeeze out of it.

The right time to think about exit is when you're calm and the position isn't open yet. You have no emotional attachment to the outcome. No unrealized gains making you greedy. No red chart making you panic. Just the setup, the thesis, and the levels that make sense based on the chart structure.

Pick a logical target. Resistance levels, previous highs, round numbers where selling pressure historically appears. Not a random percentage that feels good. A level the market has shown it cares about.

What Happens Without One

Price hits a level you would have taken profit at if you'd planned ahead. You don't sell because it feels like it could go higher. It pulls back. You wait for it to recover. It drops further. Now you're hoping to break even instead of banking a solid gain.

This plays out thousands of times a day across crypto. The trade was right. The entry was right. The direction was right. No exit plan meant the profit evaporated anyway.

A take profit doesn't guarantee the perfect exit. It guarantees you actually exit with something.
