Every blockchain address has a birthday. First transaction ever made from that address. Everything before that is silence.

Wallet age measures how long an address has been active. Week-old wallet. Year-old wallet. Wallet that first moved funds in 2019 and has been active since.

Not a definitive signal on its own. Combined with transaction history, funding source, and behavior patterns it becomes genuinely useful information.

Why Fresh Wallets Are Suspicious at Launch

New token launches. First thirty seconds. Ten wallets buy in blocks one and two.

Check those wallets. All created within the past 48 hours. No prior transaction history. All funded from the same source address.

That's not organic retail demand. That's bundling. Insider buying. Developer or connected parties using fresh wallets to hide their identity while accumulating at the lowest possible price.

Fresh wallets exist specifically because on-chain activity is public. If the developer used their main wallet to buy the first 20% of supply, the connection to the project would be obvious. Fresh wallets break that chain. Look like independent buyers. Aren't.

GMGN surfaces wallet age on token holder views specifically because this pattern matters. Stack of fresh wallets holding significant supply at a new launch is structural overhead sitting at near-zero cost. They're leaving at some point. Question is when and whether retail is providing the exit.

What Old Wallets Signal

Opposite direction. Established wallet with years of transaction history buying into something early.

Track record exists. Can look at what that wallet bought before. Whether those calls worked out. Whether it has a pattern of being early into things that ran. Whether it consistently exits before dumps.

Old wallet doesn't automatically mean smart money. Could be a dormant address suddenly reactivated. Could be someone who's been in crypto since 2017 and consistently made bad decisions.

But old wallet with consistent profitable history across multiple market cycles is a very different signal from a wallet that appeared last Tuesday.

Smart money tracking works partly because of this. Wallet showing up as early buyer with strong historical track record across two years of transactions means something. Wallet showing up as early buyer with two weeks of history means nothing useful.

Airdrop Farming and Wallet Age

Projects use wallet age as one Sybil detection filter specifically because of farming behavior.

Airdrop announced or anticipated. Farmers spin up hundreds of fresh wallets. Run transactions through each. Try to qualify multiple addresses for the same drop.

Snapshot taken. Project sees thousands of wallets with identical ages, identical transaction patterns, funded from the same source. Flags them. Excludes them.

Wallet age alone doesn't catch everything. Combined with transaction patterns, funding sources, and behavioral clustering it's part of how projects try to distinguish genuine users from farmers running scripts.

Arbitrum's airdrop excluded hundreds of thousands of wallets partly through this kind of analysis. Wallets created specifically for the farming campaign rather than genuine historical Arbitrum users.
