Document published by a project before or at launch. Explains the problem being solved, the technical approach, token economics, team, roadmap.

Idea borrowed from academic and government policy documents. In crypto became the standard way for projects to present themselves to potential investors and users.

Bitcoin's whitepaper set the bar in October 2008. Satoshi Nakamoto published nine pages titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System." Described the entire system clearly. No hype. No promises of revolutionary disruption. Just the technical design and why it worked.

Most whitepapers since have been longer and said less.

What a Good Whitepaper Contains

Clear problem statement. What exists currently, why it's inadequate, what this project addresses that others don't.

Technical architecture. How the system actually works. Not vague claims about blockchain technology solving everything. Specific mechanisms, consensus design, smart contract logic.

Tokenomics. Supply, distribution, how the token fits into the system. Why a token is needed at all rather than just using an existing one.

Team. Who built this and what their background is. Verifiable identities with track records in relevant fields.

Roadmap. Concrete milestones with realistic timelines. Not "Q3 2025: revolutionize finance."

Risks. Honest assessment of what could go wrong. Projects that only describe upside and never acknowledge risk are telling you something about how they think.

What Most Whitepapers Actually Are

The 2017 ICO boom turned whitepapers into fundraising documents. Projects raised millions on whitepapers alone with no working product, no proven team, no realistic path to execution.

Elaborate technical language. Impressive diagrams. Vague tokenomics that justified whatever allocation the founders wanted. Roadmaps extending years into the future full of milestones nobody intended to meet.

Many of those projects disappeared. The whitepaper was the product. Once the raise was done there was nothing left to build.

Pattern hasn't entirely gone away. Polished whitepaper with aggressive marketing still appears on projects that amount to nothing. Reading one carefully is useful. Treating it as validation of a project's legitimacy isn't.

Red Flags Worth Looking For

Plagiarized content

Common. Sections copied from other project whitepapers or academic papers with minimal modification. Easy to check. Paste suspicious paragraphs into a search engine.

No technical specifics

Lots of words about disrupting industries and creating value. Nothing concrete about how the system works technically. If the whitepaper can't explain the mechanism it's describing something that doesn't exist yet or was never designed properly.

Token allocation skewed heavily to founders

Tokenomics section showing 40-50% going to team and advisors with short or no vesting. Whitepaper presenting this as reasonable is telling you where the money goes when the raise is done.

Unrealistic roadmap

Every quarter a major milestone. Mainnet in six months. Partnerships with Fortune 500 companies in year one. Roadmaps that look like a wish list rather than a plan.

Whitepaper vs Litepaper

Some projects publish both.

• Whitepaper: full technical document. Detailed architecture, formal descriptions, complete tokenomics breakdown. Intended for technical readers doing serious due diligence.
• Litepaper: simplified summary. Key points without the technical depth. Designed for broader audience who want to understand the concept without reading the full document.

Litepaper alone without a full whitepaper sometimes signals the technical detail doesn't exist yet. Or never will.
