What Is a Hard Fork in Crypto?
Blockchain runs on rules. Every node follows the same protocol.
Hard fork changes those rules in a way that breaks backward compatibility. Old software rejects new transactions as invalid. New software rejects old ones. Two versions of the network simultaneously.
If enough people keep running old software, two chains exist permanently. Both carrying identical history up to the fork block. Completely separate after it.
The DAO Fork
- The DAO raised $150 million in ETH. Biggest crowdfunding in history at the time. Then a hacker found a vulnerability and drained $60 million of it.
Ethereum community had to decide something that sounds simple but isn't. Do you rewrite history to recover the funds. Or do you leave it because blockchain is immutable and the hack was technically valid according to the rules.
Majority chose the fork. Ethereum hard forked. Stolen funds recovered. Hack undone.
Minority said no. Code is law. Immutability isn't negotiable. They kept running the original chain.
That chain became Ethereum Classic. ETC still trades today. Not worth much compared to ETH but it exists. Living proof that the argument never fully resolved. Just got priced by the market.
The philosophical split from that decision still runs through crypto. Pragmatism versus principle. Intervene when things go wrong or let the code run regardless of consequences. Neither side has fully won.
Bitcoin Cash and the Block Size Wars
- Bitcoin was congested. Fees rising. Transactions backing up. Blocks full.
Two camps formed. One wanted bigger blocks. More transactions per block. Faster and cheaper. The other wanted small blocks and second-layer scaling through Lightning Network.
Couldn't agree. Went on for years. Got genuinely nasty. Core developers, miners, large holders all publicly fighting.
August 2017 one side forked. Bitcoin Cash launched with 8MB blocks. BCH holders got equal BCH for their BTC at the fork block.
Bitcoin kept 1MB. Both chains continued. BCH then forked again in 2018 into Bitcoin SV when that community split over the same kind of disagreement.
Bitcoin dominates. BCH and BSV exist but never came close to threatening Bitcoin. That's usually how contentious forks end. Original chain retains most value, developers, users. Forked chain gets a small committed community and a permanently lower price.
Hard Fork vs Soft Fork
Hard fork: breaking change. Everyone must upgrade or get left behind. Split possible if disagreement exists.
Soft fork: non-breaking. Old nodes still valid on new network. Just can't use new features. Less dramatic. Less contentious. Most people don't even notice them happening.
SegWit in 2017 was a Bitcoin soft fork. New transaction format. Old nodes still participated. No split. No drama. Just a quiet upgrade that most users never thought about.
Hard forks get attention because they force a choice. Soft forks don't. That's the entire practical difference.
Hard Fork FAQ
Can a hard fork be reversed?
No. Once both chains accumulate significant history they're permanently separate. No authority exists to declare one legitimate. Market decides by assigning value. Usually heavily favors one side.
