Short for wrecked. Severe financial loss. Position gone, portfolio destroyed, trade went catastrophically wrong.

Originated in online gaming. Getting completely dominated by an opponent. Migrated into crypto as the communities heavily overlapped in the early days. Stuck permanently.

Used both seriously and as dark humor. Community coping mechanism for losses that are very real.

Ways to Get Rekt

Leverage liquidation. Most complete version. Entire margin wiped in one move. Position closes automatically. Account smaller. Nothing to show for it. Classic rekt experience.

Buying the top. FOMO into a parabolic move. Token dumps 70% immediately after. Holding a bag at peak price while early buyers exited into the buy.

Rugpull. Thought it was a legitimate project. Developer drained liquidity. Token worthless. Can't sell. Rekt through someone else's deliberate action.

Honeypot. Bought a token where the contract blocks selling. Money in, never coming out. Didn't check the contract. Rekt before the trade even had a chance.

Holding through a cycle. Bought during bull market euphoria. Held through the entire bear. Portfolio down 85%. Technically still holding. Functionally rekt.

How Rekt Actually Feels in Practice

The word gets thrown around casually. The reality is often worse than it sounds.

Leverage liquidation at 3 AM. You went to sleep with a position open. Woke up to a notification. Account balance: zero. The market moved against you while you slept and the exchange closed everything automatically. No second chance, no partial recovery. Just gone.

The altcoin that was going to change everything. You did research. Read the whitepaper. Joined the Discord. Bought a meaningful position. Six months later the team has gone quiet, the token is down 95%, and liquidity is so thin you can't exit without crashing the price further on yourself. Technically not a rugpull. Effectively the same outcome.

The overleveraged bull run. 2021 style. 10x leverage on a coin already up 300%. It goes up another 20% and you're a genius. Then it drops 10% and you're liquidated. The worst part isn't losing the money. It's that the coin actually did recover two weeks later. Just without you in it.

Rekt as Community Language

Not every use is serious. Crypto Twitter uses rekt constantly as shorthand, meme fuel, and group therapy simultaneously. Someone posts their liquidation notification and gets 500 replies of "F." That's rekt culture. Communal acknowledgment that the market is brutal and everyone is one bad trade away from posting the same thing.

It removes some of the shame. If the whole community talks openly about getting destroyed, it normalizes the reality that losses happen to everyone. Even experienced traders get rekt. The difference is position sizing and risk management that keeps a single rekt from ending the game entirely.
